Today, gorgeous readers it’s all about wedding garters! Thanks to Mary Juliet Wedding Garters you can win a wedding garter for your special day. If you’d like to find out more, read on…
A wedding garter is such a small part of a brides outfit, but now after the big day is over, unlike my dress which I’ve only looked at a handful of times, I see my garter every day. It lives in my underwear drawer (isn’t that where all girls keep their important bits and bobs?!) and just seeing the lace pouch it lives in makes me smile every morning!
I came across Mary Juliet Wedding Garters a few months ago through her Instagram account (@maryjuliet_wedding_garters). Mary Juliet wedding garters is a collection of beautiful garters – each one designed, handmade and finished in London. The styles are beautifully original, delicate, and all are
meticulously sewn to the highest standard. Only pure silk and lace is used, and each garter is hand embellished with pearl beads and crystals.
Each month Mary Juliet offers brides a chance of winning a wedding garter. So I contacted her to see if she would offer one lovely Bonjour Bride reader the same. If you’re looking for a beautiful keepsake wedding garter to wear on your wedding day make sure you read how to enter the competition below.
First I wanted to find out more about Mary Juliet, her company and what inspires her beautiful collection of wedding garters…
What made you start a wedding garter company?
I had the idea for Mary Juliet wedding garters years ago. At first, I was considering starting an online lingerie store where I would sell existing boutique lingerie brands – looking back, I wouldn’t have been very good at it! As I was thinking through different ideas, it became apparent that I would be happiest if I were able to design and make products myself. I’d made a wedding garter for a friend and the idea stemmed from there.
All my designs stem from my personal taste, which I suppose is very feminine. I then adapt the idea, keeping in mind the brides that will wear the garter on their special day.
My inspiration comes from all over and sometimes it’s quite hard to pinpoint. It could be something really small – like a colour, or even a piece of jewellery I noticed on someone. I only started to make the most of social media when I started the business in January 2016 – so the designs were inspired by magazines (Vogue, which I’ve bought every month, for years), films (old and modern), and luxury lingerie.
Although the wedding garters are wedding accessories, I originally approached the collection from a lingerie perspective. I would look at couture lingerie brands such as La Perla and Carine Gilson for inspiration on silks and lace. I wanted the wedding garters to look just as beautiful and sensual when being worn, as they did in their gift box. Making sure they looked beautiful from all angles, and particularly pretty from above, where the bride would viewing it from was really important to me.
Do you have a favourite design?
I love and enjoy making all the designs in the collection, although I am drawn to the simplicity of the Carmel style. Having said that I do like the more frou-frou lace and sparkling designs as well such as Sugared Lace, so I suppose I can’t choose! I revised the styles over and over again before they felt completely finished and I was happy with them. I am proud and attached to each and every wedding garter I make.
I also really enjoy creating bespoke wedding garter designs with brides – a service I offer. It’s both fun and a wonderful creative challenge – working with, discussing ideas and corresponding with brides is one of the perks of the job.
How long does it take to make a garter?
It depends on the design, but all the garters take a fair amount of time to create. All the wedding garters are hand-finished and come with a handmade silk drawstring bag. Each of the designs has hand-sewn crystals and pearl details which take several hours to do. It is very satisfying, but quite painstaking work!
If it’s not top secret, what exciting things are coming up?
Alongside the existing signature collection, I’m working on some new designs that include some new and different colours. I want my wedding garters to be a way for brides to add a touch of fun and individuality to their look.
