This glamorous fusion wedding complete with a full on Bollywood Dance is so wonderful. Melissa and Leo tied the knot in February this year at 28 Portland Place. The rooms throughout the venue are picture perfect and full of stunning details – including a beautiful stained glass window.
The couple planned a fun and relaxed celebration and the result was a day full of smiles, personal touches, and the best first dance photographs I’ve seen in a very long time. More weddings with group first-dances please! With the help of WILMA Event Design, the details are stunning. Oh, and of course, a personalised tube map is a winner in my book every day of the week! Happy Wednesday lovelies…

The bridal party attire
I bought a simple bespoke dress for the wedding that I teamed with simple vintage gold jewellery. Leo chose to wear an incredible Hugo Boss suit.
My bridesmaids wore whatever they wanted! It was a very chilled wedding. They all decided to wear blue, but it varied from a couture jumpsuit to a vintage bargain. Ushers wore blue suits and matching light blue ties.
We met in a tiny bar in Islington called ‘The Bar with no name’ a.k.a 49 Colebrook Row and Leo gave me a mounted photograph of the bar as a gift. I gave him the aftershave he wore when we first met. We didn’t discuss gifts at all. We both surprised each other.
Glamorous fusion wedding
A long list of things inspired us when we were planning – cocktails, old school glamour, beautiful lighting and ultimately our wedding designers WILMA Event Design who were absolutely incredible.
I redesigned the London tube map for our wedding invitations making each station into a place that meant something to us so we had a kind of underground 1920s, cocktail, vintage, glamorous fusion wedding theme for the day.
Group first dance
Our first dance was a flash mob dance with 8 of our best friends to a Bollywood track called ‘Maahi Ve’ as a nod to Leo’s Sri Lankan background. The photos from this part of the night are so much fun!
J & A Photography are friends of mine with a blossoming photography business. We loved their images and needed a photographer for the wedding so it worked out perfectly!
Instead of a wedding cake we had a tower of cheeses from Paxton and Whitfield and our close friends made some incredible chutneys. Loads of guests brought homemade cakes too, it was all delicious.
As well as doing a flash mob first dance, I made a film instead of doing a speech which was a complete surprise to Leo and all the guests. We also had an incredible band – the Blue Lion Band who played literally everything we asked for, from 90s garage to Michael Jackson.
Words of wisdom
Enjoy it – make the most of the planning, and the looking forward to it because the day goes by in a flash!
Thanks to Melissa and Leo for sharing their wonderful, super fun celebration with us. And of course and to J & A photography for the beautiful images.
